QUALITY HERBAL MEDICINES THE FIRST CHOICE ALTERNATIVE PRACTICE FOR HEALTHCARE
Biography:
Yaw Sarpong Bediakop is a senior research phytochemist at the Diagnostic Herbal Industry (DHI),
where she leads product development and quality control of herbal distillates and herbal teas. he
holds an MSc in Pharmacognosy from the University of Ghana and has o ver four years of experience
in standardizing traditional plant medicines. H is research interests include bioactive compound
profiling, sustainable extraction methods, and clinical validation of alternative therapies. He has
presented at multiple conferences on integrative healthcare and is a contributing author to the Journal
of Herbal Medicine.
Research Interests:
The global shift toward alternative healthcare practices has intensified the need for standardized,
high-quality herbal medicines. This paper presents Thorntina -74, a novel herbal distillate formulated
from a synergistic blend of three medicinal plants —Moringa oleifera, Spondias mombin, and
Tetrapleura tetraptera —as a primary candidate for first -line alternative therapy. Certified by the Food
and Drugs Authority (FDA) of Ghana, Thorntina -74 contains a diverse profile of bioactive compounds
including alkaloids, flavonoids, and terpenes. The purpose of this study was to evaluate its therapeutic
potential using gas chromatography -mass spectrometry (GC -MS) for chemical characterization, in
vitro assays for anti -inflammatory and antimicrobial activity, and in viv o analysis conducted on human
subjects. Key findings revealed consistent compound profiles across three independent batches, with
significant inhibition of pro -inflammatory cytokines (IL -6 and TNF-?) and broad-spectrum activity
against Staphylococcus aureu s and Candida albicans. Furthermore, the human in vivo analysis
demonstrated that Thorntina -74 aids in managing blood -related diseases such as anemia and
coagulation disorders, while also protecting vital human organs including the liver and kidneys from
oxidative damage. These results indicate that Thorntina -74 offers a reproducible, plant -based
alternative for managing common infections, inflammatory conditions, hematological imbalances,
and organ toxicity. The implications for alternative health practice are substantial: a standardized,
FDA-approved distillate derived from indigenous plants can bridge the gap between traditional herbal
knowledge and evidence -based integrative medicine, promoting patient trust and regulatory
acceptance. This work supports the conference theme by demonstrating how quality -controlled
herbal products can serve as safe, effective first choices in primary healthcare.
